Bike Frame Types – Understanding The Different Types

There are a lot of bike frame types to choose from when it comes to biking. When you are first starting out, you will want to find one that is made especially for your body type. You will also want a frame with large amounts of give. The most important factor in bike frame selection is the type of riding you will be doing. This will determine which frame type you should get.

 Main Bike Frame Types

There are two main bike frame types that are made by a few different bike manufacturers. These are the double butted and the tapered roller track frames. Double butted have big ends that are able to bend in order to accommodate larger tires on the back. Taper roller tracks have smaller ends that are less bendable. These are typically used for indoor racing surfaces.

Another frame type is the semi-framed design. This design features a middle part that is wider at the bottom and narrow at the top. This part contains the main components and the handlebars. The handlebars are typically what people will use for changing gears on their bicycles. The benefits of this design include lighter weight, easier maintenance, and better control.

Rear Suspension System

The next bike frame types to look at are the ones that include a rear suspension system. These frames usually feature a rigid front fork and a rear suspension component. The most common type of rigid system is a full suspension design. These frames also commonly include a shock-absorption system that works with a hydraulic system on the front wheel.

Another bike type is called the all-mountain design. This bike type usually has all of the components that are needed to complete a complete mountain bike ride. This includes a strong frame, a rigid front fork, and a rigid rear suspension. The benefit of this bike type is that it is stronger than other designs. It is also better at absorbing shock absorption. Many times, these frames will be used on pavement as well as mountain trails.

 Hardtail Bike Frame

The last frame type to look at is the hard tail bike. These bikes have a lower profile than other designs. Many times a hard tail bike can only be ridden on dirt bike paths. A benefit of these bikes is that they are light weight and are easy to maneuver. In addition to being lightweight, many times fiber frames are made from aluminum.

Most of the time when someone hears about the term “carbon frame bikes”, their first thought is going to be a mountain bike. These bikes do make use of fiberglass or other materials, but they are not made out of carbon. However, there are some companies that make full suspension systems that are carbon based. These carbon frame bikes are much heavier than traditional hard tail bikes. These bikes offer more suspension and a greater level of performance. The price of these bikes can be upwards of $1000.

Last Words

When looking at a bike, check the parts of the bike frame. This will tell you if the bike is going to last and perform well while riding. If you can, try riding the same bike you would use for training. This will give you a good idea of the durability of the bike.
