Cycling Mistakes You Should Avoid

Notably, whether you are cycling noob or a seasoned pro, we all make mistakes. While it is probably best to learn while making mistakes, at that time, it does not feel like it. Therefore, you need to save yourself the embarrassment, time and hassle of making silly cycling mistakes. Follow these simple tips and enjoy a great and memorable experience on your bike.

Saddle Height Is Critical In Cycling

This is an easy and very common mistake to make. Too high or low a saddle can lead to loss of power as well as injury. While it is mostly unique to each rider, there are some guidelines to follow. The right height for your saddle is a fully extended leg till the pedal. If your saddle height does not feel right, change it to suit your comfort level.

Loss of Fuel

‘Hitting the wall’ or ‘bonking’ as most cyclists call it, is when the body simply runs of energy. Therefore, you come to an almost complete halt. It will only get worse till you refuel. Make sure you are well fed. Porridge and bananas, or toast and honey are great fuels to keep your body going for a few hours. Even a sandwich can add energy while you run out of steam.

Not Carrying Spares

Your bike can break down at odd places. Getting help is not the option in such cases all the time. Thus, you need to get yourself back on the road as soon as possible. Carry simple fix tools to handle issues like a puncture yourself. Moreover, a mini air pump can quickly fix the low pressure in your tires.

Dress For Cycling Not Shopping

Remember to dress right for the experience. In colder conditions, it is always better to overdress than under. Consequently, take them off if not needed. But even warmer climates, never leave your house without a rain cape or a Gillet, because cycling can cause your body temperature to plummet if there is a sudden downpour. If your ride is uphill, remember the higher you go, the colder it will turn. A windproof cape is always a good idea to keep your body heat.

Poor Maintenance

Get into the habit of regular checks and keeping your bike well maintained. Not only it will make you perform better, but it will also a safer, easier and pleasurable experience. Pay special attention to brakes, gears, and tires and make sure you regularly move and clean the chain. If you are comfortable doing all this by yourself at home, most bike shops do offer servicing facilities. Make sure you take it every now and then and get things fixed.

Cycling is a tough sport at the best of times. While there is nothing wrong with wanting to go at it all guns blazing, it is important to know your limits and ride within it. Going too hard too soon will ruin your ride and your morale. So make sure you consider all these aspects before taking it up. You will do a lot better and cycle for a sustained period of time when you make the experience enjoyable and memorable.
