There are certain steps to follow to arrive at the right gear specification. First of all, you need to know the machine and its function. This step is very important since there are some types of gears that cannot be used for certain types of machines.

Next, it is necessary to understand the transmission function of the machine. There are mainly three types of gears in a transmission. They are spur gear, slip-type and geared. There are also certain transmission functions that cannot be done without a particular gear. The gears in these types of transmission are used to move the shafts at high speeds.

Determine The Gear Ratio

The next step is to determine the gear ratio. This is necessary to check if the gear changes gears smoothly or chaotically depending on the transmitted speed. The gear ratio is basically expressed as the ratio of the number of teeth on one shaft to the number of teeth on the other shaft. It is measured in ratios like 1:1, 0.707, and 0.70:1. There are mainly four types of ratios, each being one in which one gear is selected over the other. These types of ratios are known as forward, reverse, neutral, and concentric gear ratios.

They can rotate at different speeds; therefore, they produce torque which is then transmitted to the wheels. This type of gear provides better power transmission because the helical gears transfer rotation torque to the wheel thus changing the angular speed of the drive system relative to the speed of the transmission.

Lastly, the last type is the spur gear. This type of gear has two spirals that spin in a clockwise and anti-clockwise direction. Because of its design, it allows little backlash. This type of transmission is commonly used by machines that produce small torque, such as electric motors. These are the commonly used gears in machinery today.
