As a beginner, fixing even the littlest of problems in your bike parts may seem daunting. Therefore, you often leave it to be fixed by the mechanic. It is undeniable that leaving the bike to a professional for repairs is a good thing to do. However, not all things need a huge expense. There are a few bike parts you can check on your own. Here are the most important parts that need to be kept in check for proper maintenance and durability.

The Most Important Of Bike Parts – Chain

The chain is the most important part of your bike that converts your body’s power into mechanical power to keep your bike running. While sometimes you can fix the chain at home, you also need to take your bike to the mechanic for a thorough inspection.

The first oddity of the chain is rust. It can easily be seen with naked eyes – an orangish-brown layer on the chain. Other signs of rust are excessive dryness and stiffness. Rust can occur due to the accumulation of dirt and grime. You always want your chain rust-free and slightly coated with a thin layer of clean oil.

Secondly, your chain could have stiff links. These are not at all shy and show their presence by skipping the chain after every few revolutions. While putting up the chain back in place will allow you to use the bike, it will not kill the problem. You need to take the bike to the mechanic for a proper repair.

Lastly, another problem could be the chain stretch. Notably, your chain should not be more than 75% stretched. Any more stretch can cause damage to many other parts of your ride. To make sure this does not happen, you have only one thing to do – take your bike to the mechanic from time to time for regular servicing.

Check Your Tires For Better Riding

The tires are what enable you to use the bicycle with combined efforts of other constituents of the bicycle. You can check for wear and tear of your tires in the following ways:

  • Check for the presence of tire patterns. If you find none, it means that it is time to get them changed.
  • The rubber becomes brittle and loses its elasticity. In other words, the tire becomes dry. Dry tires also tend to crack open making your bike prone to puncture.
  • Exposure of the inner tubes as a result of any large cut or damage.

To check for wear in your tire, look for bald patches where the tire pattern is invisible and the texture looks dry. Once you have found that, check for cracks in the rubber. They are found evenly distributed all around the tire. If you are unlucky enough to find both of the mentioned oddities, it is time to change the tire. If you have ever heard of fixing the tire, it is a complete scam. There is no way to fix a tire, you need to replace them completely. Trust us, even the Earth will thank you when you get rid of the old, cracked tires.
